NFI Vermont Presents:

Trans 101: Understanding and Working with Transgender, Transsexual and Gender Non-Binary

Youth and Their Families

With Julie Graham, MFT

Julie Graham is the Director of Transgender Health Services (THS) with the San Francisco Department of Public Health.  THS was the first program in the country to provide access to medically necessary gender confirmation for uninsured and underinsured public health patients.  As a mental health gender specialist, Julie has worked exclusively with transgender, transsexual and gender non-binary people over the past twelve years. Julie developed assessment protocols and psychosocial supports for public health consumers desirous of gender confirmation surgery and worked closely with insurance and access programs to improve their responsiveness to the needs of transgender and gender non-binary people in the San Francisco Health

Network.  Julie is concerned about the manifestations of intersectionality in healthcare inequities, developing models that support diversity of identities and starting with a frame of trauma informed gender care.  A broad focus of Julie's work over the past four years is to expand provider sensitivity, knowledge, and skills regarding gender identity for youth and adult providers and offering the community accurate information regarding medical transition. Julie is particularly interested in the overlap of gender identity and autism spectrum disorders and creating models of care where providers can rebuild trust with the transgender, transsexual and gender non-conforming communities.

Julie is also the curriculum chair of the World Professional Association of Transgender Health's Global Education Initiative (WPATH) and assists in the development of culturally and clinically relevant materials for the WPATH's education and certification efforts. Julie is also a therapist in private practice and a consultant.

NFI is excited to partner with Healthy Living to offer a Mood and Food cooking and nutrition class, starting in April 2016 for 6 weeks. The facilitators include program directors Rae Donovan and Ali Wise, and former NFI employee Kelly Wagner, who is now a naturopathic physician. We will not only create delicious and healthy food together, but we will teach on the importance of eating certain foods to improve mood and, why certain foods negatively impact our emotions. Essentially we will teach how food science influences our mental health. We are excited to offer current research on the microbiome, inflammation, serotonin, and much more.
